Memorial Weekend Horse Show to raise money for equestrian program...

Riders interested in show jumping will get to compete and raise money for a good equestrian cause at the Alex Hartner Memorial Jumper Show, Saturday, May 23, 2009 at Big Easy Farm at Canterbury Farm in Boyds, MD.

Alex Hartner died at the young age of 18 last year in a tragic car accident. She acquired a passion for horses at Germantown, MD-based Butler Montessori School. She was an accomplished horsewoman and brought her love for horses and advanced equestrian skills to many children she taught.

All horse show proceeds will go to Butler’s equestrian program.

Adrian Ford, Alex’ trainer is hosting the show along with several of his clients who rode with Alex over the years. The show has seven jumping divisions with two classes per division starting at 18” and going up to 3’9”. Adrian says: “This show will include jumpers at all levels including Carlos Aramburo from Wilmington, NC, a Grand Prix jumper who will dazzle everyone with his grace over the jumps.”

Jane and George Hartner, parents of Alex, held a benefit show last October in North Carolina where they now live and Alex graduated from high school. The horse show raised over $40,000 to go toward scholarships in Alex’s name for kids at her high school and college where she was a member of the equestrian team.

Jane looks forward to the Memorial Day Jumper Show. “I’m thrilled that Alex’s love of horses will continue through exposing more kids to such a wonderful sport. And, to know the kids at Butler will get the same opportunity Alex had is wonderful.”

Alexandra (Alex) Hartner, 18, died January 13, 2008, from injuries incurred in an automobile accident in which she was a passenger. But it is her life, not her death that is important to those touched by her incredible character. And live she did; simply put, Alex sparkled. The light that was Alex shone especially bright around all things equine. Those who loved Alex are establishing the Alex Hartner Memorial Horse Show to celebrate her passion for horses and to benefit two scholarship funds that have been established in her honor. Her family is thrilled that three organizations that were very dear to Alex, the St. Andrews Presbyterian College Equestrian Team (Alex was a freshman at St. Andrews and proud member of the team), the Horseman Association of Columbus County (Alex had the time of her life participating in their phenomenal shows), and Shingleton Farms (Alex kept her horse, Ace, there and was one of their favorite camp counselors) are coming together to create this horse extravaganza. We are also grateful that the show is being held at the Lake Waccamaw Boys and Girls Home Exhibition Center. Alex showed at this accommodating facility many times, and it was one of her favorite places in the world to be. To top it all off, one of the world’s leading designers of Jumper courses (he is designing the Stadium Jumper course for the Olympics in China) Steve Stephens has graciously agreed to come to Alex’s show with some of his prized jumps and to design our Jumper course! We know that Alex will be cheering with all of the participants at this incredible event who are helping to cherish her memory and having a blast in the process. Ride on.
